20. HUGH3 MCCUNE CLIFFORD (Matilda2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born 1858 or 1859 in Lockport, Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; died 16 June 1914 in Hoboken, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Hugh McCune Clifford was my grandfather. See detailed discussion and photographs of Hugh McCune and Ida Louise (Zinn) Clifford in the web site Cliffords, from New Jersey to Pennsylvania and beyond.

Hugh M. and his brothers Edward, and Gilson Clifford were freight engineers for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Hugh M.'s work region was probably mainly between Pittsburgh east to about Altoona. He was in the Johnstown Flood of 1889. Hugh died the day his sister Rebecca Clifford was buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery, West Fairfield, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Hugh is buried in Ligonier Valley Cemetery, Ligonier, Pennsylvania. He married (first) 26 May 1881 in Conemaugh (East Taylor Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, Johnstown area) SARAH BOUCHER; born 17 September 1856; died 11 January 1887 of diphtheria (11 days after daughter Katie Clifford died of diphtheria); buried in Ligonier Valley Cemetery. Sarah's brother was John Newton Boucher, distinguished lawyer of Westmoreland County, and author of several books including the four-volume history treatise (with Fredrick Y. Hedley) Old and New Westmorland, 1918.

Hugh married (second) 17 September 1889 in Elk Creek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, IDA LOUISE ZINN; born 20 August 1859 in Amboy, Ashtabula County, Ohio; died 10 September 1945 in Warren, Pennsylvania; buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Oil City, Pennsylvania. Ida (Zinn) Clifford married circa 1906 Justin J. (Jesse) DeVoge, born circa 1858. The Zinn family is treated in the web site Ancestors and descendants of Conrad Zinn.

Ralph and Marie (Fleming) Clifford were my parents. They are both buried in Fairview Cemetery, Pleasantville (Oil Creek Township, Venango County), Pennsylvania.


21. THOMAS3 GILSON CLIFFORD (Matilda2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born 1861 in Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; died 1899 in Derry, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; married ANNA [—?—]; born 1867 in Pennsylvania.275

22. JEFFERSON3 REDICK (Samuel2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born July 1857 in Ohio; died 1933; married, 16 September 1879,277 MARY FRANCIS (FRANKIE) BAKER; born October 1862 in Ohio; died 1947. Both Jefferson and Francis (inscription reads Francis) are buried in East Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.278

Jefferson was a farmer. In 1900, the family was in Unity Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. In 1910, the family had moved to St Clair Township, Columbiana County. In 1920 and 1930, Jefferson and Francis were living in the household of their son Ross and his family in Middleton Township, Columbian County.279

98 i. Dallas4 W. Redick; born April 1882 in Ohio; died 1952; married Anna R. McFarland; born 1889; died 1955. Both Dallas and Anna are buried in East Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.280

In 1910, Dallas, single, was a boarder in the household of Frederick and Amanda Lamping in St Clair Township, Columbia County, where Dallas was listed as a farm laborer.281 In 1920, Dallas, Annie and daughter Doris were living in Salem Township, Columbiana County, where Dallas was still listed as a farm laborer.282 In 1930, Dallas, Annie and Doris had moved to St Clair Township, Columbian County, where Dallas was enumerated as a grocery store salesman.

(a) Doris M. Redick, born 2 October 1915 in St Clair Township, Ohio, died 4 April 1991, married Victor C. Yarian, born 18 March 1911, died February 1974. Both Doris and Victor are buried in East Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.283 No information on children.

100 iii. John Ross Redick; born October 1887 in Ohio; married Sarah Essie Chamberlain; born circa 1888 in Ohio. In 1920 the family was living in Middleton Township, where Ross was listed as a farmer. Also living with the family in 1920 were Ross's parents, Jefferson and Frances Redick. In 1930, Ross (head of household and still farming) and his children were living in Middleton Township with Ross's parents.284 No indication that Ross was a widower or divorced.

26. BENJAMIN3 LANKFORD REDICK (Samuel2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born June 1867 in Ohio; died 6 February 1921; married, 25 December 1889, JEMIMA CARTWRIGHT; born May 1867 in Ohio; died 1941. She was a daughter of Marcus and Ann Cartwright.285 Both Benjamin and Jemima are buried in Riverview Cemetery, East Liverpool, Ohio.286

Benjamin was a saggerman in the pottery industry. In 1900, the family lived East Liverpool, Ohio. In 1910 and 1920, the family was in Grant Township, Hancock County, West Virginia. Benjamin was enumerated as a farmer in 1920. Benjamin had died by 1930, at which time Jemima was living by herself in Grant Township, Hancock County, West Virginia.287

[—?—]; born 1903; both Carl T. and Mary are buried in Riverview Cemetery, East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio.288 In 1920, Carl T. and Margarite were living in East Liverpool, Ohio (census page 5B), whre Carl was enumerated as a kiln placer (places clayware in kilns) in the pottery industry. Also with Carl and Margarite in 1920 was Harry Cartwright, born circa 1889 in Ohio. Harry was enumerated as a locomotive fireman. Note that Carl's father, Benjamin, married Jemina Cartwright.
NN iv. Raymond Redick; born 8 April 1899 in Ohio; died 20 April 1970; last resident: East Liverpool, Ohio; married Bernice [possibly Ferguson]; born 1902 in Ohio; died 21 June 1972. In 1920, Raymond, single and living with his parents, was a "batter out" in the pottery industry. In 1930, the family was in East Liverpool, Ohio, where Raymond was enumerated as a clay carrier in the pottery industry.289

105 v. Mabel Redick; born circa 1902 in Ohio; married [—?—] Guest. In 1920, Mabel, single and living with her parents, was a ware dresser in the pottery industry. In 1930, Mabel Guess was living with her uncle Harrington and family in Wellsville, Ohio.
106 vi. E. Clifford Redick; born 18 September 1906 in West Virginia; died January 1965; married Ellen [—?—]; born circa 1908 in Ohio. In 1930 Clifford, Ellen and daughter Nidea were living in East Liverpool, where Clifford was a jigger in the pottery industry (jiggering is a method of making flatware pottery, for example, saucers).

30. HARRINGTON3 O. REDICK (Samuel2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born 11 March 1875 in St Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.290 His mother, Cynthia, died 14 March 1875, three days after giving birth to a child who died 11 March 1875.291 Since we know from the 1900 federal census that Harrington was born in March 1875, he would be a twin? I have not yet listed Harrington's twin as a child. Harrington married ELIZABETH A. HUGHES; born circa 1875 in England.

In 1910, the family lived in St Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, where Harrington was a saggerman in the pottery business. He was enumerated as a saggerman in 1920 when Harrington, Elizabeth and family lived in Salem Township, Columbiana County; and in 1930 when Harrington, Elizabeth and son Charles were living with their niece Mabel Guest (#105) (daughter of Benjamin and Jemina Redick) in Wellsville, Ohio.292

On 27 August 1918, Williard enlisted in the U. S. Army.294 In 1920, Willard, single and still living with his parents was listed as a mill worker in a tin mill. In 1930, Willard and Helen, no children reported, were living in East Liverpool, Ohio, where Willard, like several other descendents of Samuel and Cynthia Redick, was in the pottery industry, being enumerated as a "kiln maker, decorating."295

34. EMMA3 FLORENCE LOUDEN (Lydia2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born 13 April 1853 in Ohio; died 13 April 1899; married SAMUEL G. JOHNSTON (also spelled or indexed Johnson); born June 1848 in Ireland.297 In 1880, the family was living in Wayne Township, Summit County, Ohio, where Samuel was enumerated as a "builder." By 1900, Emma had died, but Samuel and son Addis were still living in Wayne Township, where Samuel was farming.298

37. ROBERT3 HAYS LOUDEN (Lydia2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born 28 April 1858 in Ohio; died 19 October 1919; married EMMA YOUNG; born 17 January 1867 in Ohio; died 12 September 1943.299

The family lived in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, where Robert was a farmer. By 1920, Robert had died and Emma was head of the household.300 By 1930, only children Paul and Helen were still living at home with their mother, Emma.301

Burdette Walter "Abe" Louden; born 17 July 1906 in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, Ohio; married (first), 26 August 1926, Edith Pelley; died 17 March 1973; married (second), 18 January 1975, Mary Beckley. Burdette and Mary had no children. In 1930, Burdette, Edith and son James were living in Hanover Township, where Burdette was listed as a laborer in a garage.306

38. OHIO3 DAYTON LOUDEN (Lydia2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born 26 July 1860 in Wayne Township, Columbiana County, Ohio; died 29 November 1936; married (first), 24 May 1900, MAGGIE MYRTLE BELAT; born 31 August 1880 in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, Ohio; died 17 December 1903, 12 days after the birth of her son Eugene.

In 1900, Maggie Louden was living with her parents, William and Lavina Belat, in Hanover Township, Columbiana County.307 Dayton married (second), 14 November 1907, ELIZABETH C. ATKINSON; born circa 1868 in Ohio (no children).308 In 1910, Ohio Dayton, Elizabeth, and Ohio's children Lillian and Eugene were living in Flushing Township, Belmont County, Ohio, where Ohio owned a hardware store. The family had moved to Painesville, Ohio by 1920, where Ohio was listed as a nurseryman. By 1930, Ohio, divorced, was living by himself, no occupation reported, in Painesville, Ohio.309

138 i. Lillian4 M. Louden; born 5 April 1901; died June 1972 in Tiffins, Ohio. Lillian apparently did not marry. In 1930, she was living in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was enumerated as a school teacher.310
139 ii. Eugene Belat Louden; born 5 December 1903 in Flushing, Belmont County, Ohio; died 25 February 1969 in Painesville, Ohio; married 24 October 1924 Carol Elaine Cook; born 20 November 1903 in Painesville, Ohio; died 27 November 1993 in Perry, Ohio.
Children were
(a) William Eugene Louden, married Violet May Gregory; one daughter of William and Violet May (Gregory) Louden was Cynthia Louden, who married Herbert Michael Turk. Cynthia provided much Redick information and most of the information on the Loudens.

40. IELDON3 MERRINGTON LOUDEN (Lydia2 Redick; Jonathan1 W. Redick); born 26 September 1863 in Ohio; died 8 January 1919 in Columbiana County, Ohio (his name is sometimes erroneously indexed as Seldom); married ANNORA "ANNA" CONSER; born 4 October 1868; died 2 January 1922 in Hiram, Ohio.311

Ieldon was a farmer. The family lived in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, in 1900 and in West Township, Columbiana County, Ohio in 1910. By 1920 Ieldon had died, and Annora and son Clare were back farming in Hanover Township.312

In 1930, after David died, Cora and family were living with her single brother, Clare Louden, in Cuyahoga Falls, Summit County, Ohio.313

In 1910, Summers and Sadie R. were living by themselves in Flushing Township. Belmont County, Ohio, where Summers was listed as a clerk in a hardware store—perhaps in the store of his brother Ohio Dayton Louden. Summers and Sarah and family were still in Flushing Township in 1920, and Summers was still in the hardware business. The family moved to Wayne Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, by 1930, where the census reported Summers as a farmer.315

55. THOMAS3 ALVERSON REDICK (Cummins2 Redick; John1 W. Redick); born 25 September 1865 (or 1866) in Glasgow, Ohio; died 1910 in Chase City, Virginia, apparently after the 1910 federal census for Virginia; married ELMIRA ELIZABETH LANYON;316; born circa 1886 in Pennsylvania.317

In 1900, Thomas, age 34, single and living with his parents, was enumerated as a carpenter in Chase City, Virginia. By 1910, Thomas, Elmira and family were living with his father, Cummins, widower, in Chase City, where Thomas was listed as farm manager. Sometime after this census in 1910, Thomas died.

There was an Alverson Davis Redick, born 1855 in Kentucky, died 1909; married (first) Rebecca Jane Devall; married (second) Mary Frandes Shockley. The family lived in Old Shawneetown, Illinois. This Alverson Redick's parents were reported to be Jonathan W. Redick, born circa 1835, and Mariah A. Ward.317b I can not find a relationship between these Redicks and our Redick line.

(a) Thomas Albert Gryder. Thomas and wife had children (i) Cheryl Gryder and (ii) Deborah Gryder.
148 iii. Blanche Redick; born circa 1909 in Virginia; married [—?—] Williams. Blanche was the informant on Cummins Redick's death certificate.

57. ANN3 LAURETTA REDICK (Cummins2 Redick; John1 W. Redick); born 22 September 1869320 in Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio; died January 1944; married CHARLES HEBER LANYON;321 born February 1866 in Pennsylvania—both his parents were born in England.

W. Robert Brown had a letter written to Ann Lauretta by Robert Brown's grandfather Philip Bannon Clifford (#19). Ann, Charles and family lived in the Chase City, Virginia, area, where Charles was enumerated as a farmer in 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930.322

154 vi. Etta Leone Lanyon; born 7 July 1915; died 2 April 1990, a resident of Chase City, Mecklenburg County, Virginia.325 Etta wrote letters to Lacy (Clifford) Lewis. These letters were a major source for W. Robert Brown's Redick information, especially family legends, on the Redicks. Regrettably the letters were not dated. At the time of the letters, no date, Etta Lanyon's address was Route 1, Box 111, Chase City, Virginia.


58. FRANCIS3 LOGAN REDICK (Cummins2 Redick; John1 W. Redick); born 13 October 1871 in Ohio; still alive in 1935; married V. V. [—?—]; born circa 1879 in Virginia.326 In 1910, Francis and wife and three children were enumerated in Lunenburg County, Virginia, where Francis was listed as a farmer.327 Francis, his son F. V., and Cummins were in an 1935 picture in an unidentified Chase City, Virginia, newspaper on the occasion of Cummins' "102nd birthday." At that time Francis was listed from Meherrin, Lunenburg County, Virginia.

In 1930, there was an F. L. Ridick; farmer, born circa 1872 in Ohio (father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Ohio), Mrs. F. L.; born circa 1879 in Virginia, and children Joe, Blanch, Marie, James. and Charles, who were living in Hampden, Prince Edward County, Virginia.328 I have tentatively listed these children as those of Francis and wife.

Redick was probably the Francis Redick, born 3 December 1905, died April 1984, a resident of 74429, Coweta, Wagoner, Oklahoma.331 Francis V. Redick and his son Charles Redick, were in the newspaper photo of 1935, with Francis V.'s father, Francis Logan Redick, and Francis V's grandfather Cummins Redick on the occasion of Cummins' "102nd birthday."

In 1900, Theodore, Sarah and son Theodore were living in Canfield Township. Mahoning County, Ohio, where Theodore was farming. In 1910, the family was in Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut, where Theodore was listed as a laborer, doing odd jobs. In 1920, they were in Hartford (Avon), Connecticut, where Theodore was enumerated as a dairy farmer. By 1930, Theodore had died, and Sarah, widow, and children Theodore, Carl and Sarah E. were in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.332
