6. SAMUEL2 REDICK ( Jonathan1 Redick); born circa 1827 in
Pennsylvania; married (first) 6 January 1852 CYNTHIA (SCYNTIA) BAYLEF (also spelled Bayless and Baylus), 182 born 26 September 1832 in Pennsylvania; died 14 March 1875 in childbirth. Samuel married (second) Amy Jenkins. Living near Samuel and Cynthia Redick in 1860 and 1870 were the widow Anna Baylef, born circa 1797 in Pennsylvania; John Baylef, born circa 1827; George Baylef; and James Baylef. 183 I suspect these Baylefs were Cynthia's mother and brothers.
In 1850, Samuel, single, was living with his brother Carson Redick (also single) in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County,Ohio, where both Samuel and Carson were enumerated as shoemakers. 184 In 1860 and 1870, Samuel (enumerated as William in 1870), Cynthia and family were in St Clair Township, Columbiana County, where Samuel was farming. 185 Also in Samuel's household in 1860 were Samuel's brothers James Redick, born circa 1838?, and Cummins Redick, listed as born circa 1840. Cynthia died in 1875. By 1877, Samuel had married Amy Jenkins, who might have died in childbirth. By 1880, Samuel and children, but not Amy, were still in St Clair Township. 186
Several of Samuel and Cynthia's descendants were trades people in the pottery industry, especially descendants located in the East Liverpool, Ohio, area. I do not know the name of the potteries that our Redick ancestors might have been associated with. There were several potteries in that area of Columbiana County. See "East Liverpool, Ohio, http://en.wikipedia.org " for more information.

Both William and Margaret are buried in Riverview Cemetery, East Liverpool, Ohio.188 William and Margaret apparently did not have children. William's occupation was in the pottery industry; he was a saggerman (makes large kilns that enclose the pottery for firing). In 1900, William and Margaret were boarders in the household of Sarah Cook in Salem Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. In 1910 and 1920, they lived in East Liverpool, Columbiana County. In 1930, Margaret, widow, was still in East Liverpool, where she was a proprietor of a grocery store.189

His parents were John M. and Esther Caroline Orr.194 In 1900, George, Cynthia, and daughter Edna lived in East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio, where George was listed as a plate maker, pottery. In 1910, they had moved to St Clair Township, where George was a saggerman, pottery. In 1920, George and Cynthia had moved to Salem Township, Columbiana County, where George was farming. They had moved back to East Liverpool by 1930, where George was back in the pottery industry, as a "batter out."195 A "batter" shapes clay into molding for pottery ware, either by hand or mechanically.

area, Pennsylvania; died 3 March 1919, Wayne Township, Columbiana
County, Ohio; buried in New Lebanon Church Cemetery, Columbiana County; married
JONATHAN E. LOUDEN (also spelled or indexed as Loudon and London); born 7 September 1807 in Pennsylvania;199 died 25 June 1877, Wayne Township,
Columbiana County, Ohio; buried in the New Lebanon Church
Cemetery.200
Jonathan E. Louden's great grandparents were Jonathan and Isabella (Armstrong) Hoge. One of their children was Ann Hoge who married our David Redick. Another child was John Hoge who married Martha Rittenhouse Quail (also Quayle). John and Martha had daughter Mary Jane Hoge who married (first) Robert Louden and (second) John Louden; and it was John and Mary's son Jonathan E. Louden who married our Lydia Redick.201 See also the Hoges in the Introduction section and the Hoge-Redick Chart. On the premise that our Jonathan W. Redick was a son of John Hoge Redick and Mary Hoge, not yet proven, then Jonathan E. Louden and Lydia Redick were third cousins.
Lydia and Jonathan lived in Wayne Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, where Jonathan was a farmer. After Jonathan died in 1877, Lydia and family continued living in Wayne Township.202

12. CUMMINS2 CHILLIAN REDICK (Jonathan1 Redick). There are conflicting
reports on the birth date of Cummins. Family legend, a 1921 pension
application,216 and the date on his death certificate have Cummins
born 8 May 1833.217 However military records218 and the 1850 and
1860 federal censuses219 list Cummins born circa 1840-1841. He was
born in Pennsylvania.220 Cummins died 23 November 1937 in
Chase City, Virginia;221 married 3 December 1861 SARAH ELIZABETH CRAWFORD; born April 1843 in Ohio; died 22 December 1909.222
If Cummins was born in 1833, he would have died at age 104. There
are photographs of Cummins on his "100th and 102nd" birthdays in
unidentified Chase City (Virginia) newspapers.
Photograph titled "Four Generations," from an unidentified 1935 Chase City, Virginia, newspaper. The caption reads "Cummings C. Reddick, left of Chase City, who celebrated his 102nd year in May 1935. Shown with him are standing, left to right, his son, F. L. Reddick of Meherrin, age 61, his grandson, F. V. Reddick of Chase City, 30, and his great-grandson, Charles, age 1. The elder Mr. Reddick was a playmate of the third martyred President, William McKinley, at his Ohio home." Newspaper photograph provided by the late W. Robert Brown, Bel Air, Maryland.
I believe Cummins was born 8 May 1840 and therefore died at age 97. The 1850 and 1860 federal censuses and his military data, recorded
when he entered the army, collectively, seem like valid information.
Other than family legend, the only sources I have for Cummins being
born in 1833 are his death certificate, 1921 pension application,223
and federal censuses starting in 1880.224 At the time of his 1921
pension application, Cummins would have been in his early eighties
if he was born circa 1840. But there is one problem with Cummins being
born circa 1840 instead of 1833; that is the age of his mother at
that time. The Jane Redick listed with Jonathan Redick in 1850 was
age 49, born circa 1791225 and would have been almost fifty when
Cummins was born, assuming he was born 8 May 1840 (or 1841) instead of
1833. One explanation is that Jane's age, 49, in 1850 was simply an
error. Another explanation would be that Jane Redick listed with
Jonathan in 1850 was probably a second or even a third wife of
Jonathan W. Redick and was not the Jane Redick, mother of Cummins.
Cummins was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted in the army on 18
December 1861 (fifteen days after marrying Sarah Elizabeth Crawford) in New Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio, at age 21.226
Cummins was in Company I, 78th Regiment, Ohio Infantry; transferred to
Company C, 19th Veterans Reserve Corps on 1 August 1864. Cummins
was discharged as a Private, 19 December
1864, in Elmira, New York, because of poor health (rheumatism).227 On 17 July 1866, while living
in the New Lisbon, Ohio, area, Cummins petitioned for an Invalid
Pension.228 No age was given on the application. In 1873 Cummins, a
pensioner, still living in the New Lisbon, Ohio, area, came before the
court to request an increase in his pension.229 No age was given on this application. Cummins made another claim for a pension 14 October 1921.230 On this application Cummins gave his birth as 8 May 1833 in Ligonier,
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
In 1850, Cummins, age 9, (hence born circa 1840/41) was living with his parents in Hancock County, Virginia.231 According to family legend (and reported in an unidentified Chase City, Virginia, newspaper) Cummins was a playmate of William McKinney, who would become the twenty-fifth president of the United States. By 1860, Cummins (indexed as Carmin), single, was living in the household of his brother Samuel and family in Elkhorn Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, where Cummins and brother James were listed as farm laborers.232 I could not find Cummins in 1870 federal censuses.
In June 1873, Cummins was still living in Ohio, the New Lisbon area,
Columbiana County. Sometime after this date, Cummins moved to
Chase City, Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The 1860 federal census
for Mecklenburg County lists a James A. Reddick (school teacher, born
circa 1835 in Virginia) living in the household of T. M. Butterworth.233 Family legend has Cummins taking over the postmaster job in Chase City
previously held by "his cousin."234 This James Reddick (school teacher)
probably could not have been the James Redick tentatively listed as
a brother of Cummins, because James Redick, brother of Cummins, was living with Samuel Redick in St Clair Township Columbiana County, Ohio in 1860.235
Cummins, Sarah and family were living in Chase City (then called Christiansville), Virginia in 1880, where Cummins was enumerated as a wheelwright.236 In 1900, Cummins (as C. C.) and family were still in Chase City, where Cummins was enumerated, inexplicably (to me), as an artist.237 For the 1880 (and 1910) federal censuses, Cummins' father was reported born in Pennsylvania. For the 1900 federal census, Cummins (presumably it was Cummins who made the report) listed his father born at sea. By 1910, Cummins' wife, Sarah Elizabeth, had died; but Cummins and family were still in Chase City, where he was listed as a farmer.238 In 1930, Cummins, still head of household, was living with his granddaughter Blanche E. Redick (daughter of Thomas A. and Elmira Lanyon Redick). For this census, Cummins was still reported as a farmer, and his father was reported born on the Atlantic Ocean.239
Cummins died 23 November 1937 in Chase City, Virginia. According to his death certificate, Cummins died of "senility," and accompanying old age problems. His occupation given on the death certificate was owner of a sawmill; the informant was his granddaughter Blanche Redick. Family legend has Cummins owning several businesses in Chase City, Virginia.
Death Certificate of Cummins C. Redick, showing his age as 104, his father being born on the Atlantic Ocean, and his mother's maiden name as Jane Brooks. All of these may be in error. Copy of death certificate provided by the late W. Robert Brown, Bel Air, Maryland.
