Jonathan W. Redick and Descendants

Generation One

1. JONATHAN1 W. REDICK; born circa 1786 in Pennsylvania;154 still alive in 1850, at which time he and family were living in Hancock County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia); his occupation in 1850 was shoemaker and bootmaker. Jonathan married JANE BROOKS;155 born circa 1791 in Pennsylvania;156 still alive in 1850. Possibly Jonathan had a first wife and family.

I know of no documents spelling out the W. in Jonathan W. Redick's name. His name was listed as Jonathan W. as early as the 1810 federal census, and he continued to use the "W." on documents and subsequent censuses. For example, he was taxed from 1831-1842 as J. W. or Jonathan W. Redick.157 The "W." might have been of Jonathan's own doing, and probably stood for William. Five of Jonathan W.'s children were known to have had children. Four of the five children named their first or second son William: Matilda Clifford named her oldest son Carson William Clifford; Samuel named his second son William W. Redick; Lydia Louden named her second son William E. Louden; and Anna Young named her first son William Young. In contrast, none of Jonathan W.'s children named a son Jonathan. Also, for unknown reasons, Jonathan's son Samuel was enumerated as William in the 1870 federal census.

There was a Walker Redick, farmer; born circa 1788, living by himself in Union Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1860.158 On the census form, his birth location was apparently first listed "unknown," but then the census-taker wrote "Ireland" over the "unknown." I have found no other information on a Walker Redick.

By 1810, Jonathan W. was in Bedford County, Pennsylvania: one male between 16 and 26, one female between 26-45 years, and one male under 10 years.159 In 1810, Bedford County also included Fulton County and a small part of what was to become south-western Blair County, now Greenfield Township, which at that time was part of Huntingdon County.

In 1820, Jonathan Redick had moved to Porter Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.160 In 1820, Huntingdon County still included Blair County. At that time the family consisted of one male between 26-44 years (Jonathan), two females under 10 (one would be my great grandmother, Matilda Redick), one male 10-15 years and one female between 16-25 years, presumably Jonathan's wife (with the date probably being a census-taker error or an error by the informant?). Porter Township is in the western part of the county, west of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, bordering on Blair County. To the east is Mifflin County. Matilda (Redick) Clifford, daughter of Jonathan, was born in or near Lewistown.161 Lewistown is in Mifflin County, about 30 miles from Porter Township, Huntingdon County.

Jonathan Redick was apparently in the Ligonier area of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, by 1829, when daughter Lydia Redick was born.162 Jonathan Redick and family were enumerated in Ligonier Township, Westmoreland County, in 1830 and 1840.163 From 1831 to 1842 (1842 was the last year the tax records were reported for Ligonier Township), Jonathan was taxed in Ligonier Township.164 An Index of Landowners and Joiners for 1839 list Jonathan Redick as a Joiner (an adjoining landowner).
1831. Ligonier Township tax record: occupation ($50), (1 cow).
1834. Ligonier Township tax record: trade ($25), 47 acres ($3, each acre), 1 horse, 1 cow.
1836. Ligonier Township tax record: 1 horse, 1 cow.
1837. Ligonier Township tax record: 47 acres ($1 ), 20 acres ($1 ), 1 horse, 1 cow.
1838. Ligonier Township tax record: 47 acres ($1 ), 20 acres ($1 ), 1 horse, 1 cow.
1839. Ligonier Township tax record: 47 acres ($1 ), 1 horse.
1840. Ligonier Township tax record: 47 acres ($1 ), 1 horse ($40), 1 horse ($20).
1841. Ligonier Township tax record: farmer ($50), 47 acres ($5), 2 horses, 1 cow.
There was a Jonathan W. Redick: Warrantee of Land, 300 acres in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, 7 September 1841.165 I have not found details of this transaction. Could he be our Jonathan? In 1840, Bedford County also included Fulton County to the east and a small part of then Huntingdon County, which is now south-western Blair County.
1842. Ligonier Township tax record: farmer N. C. [?] ($50), 47 acres ($5), 1 horse, 1 cow.

Possibly when Jonathan came to Ligonier, he first pursued his trade as a boot and shoemaker.166 Matilda (Redick) Clifford, Jonathan's daughter, probably met James Clifford in the 1830s, when the Redick family was living in Ligonier. The Clifford family had lived in the Ligonier area since the mid-eighteenth century.

By 1850, Jonathan and family had moved to Hancock County, Virginia, now West Virginia, where Jonathan was listed as a boot maker and shoemaker. Hancock County is near Ohio County, West Virginia, and adjoins Columbiana County, Ohio. In 1860, Jonathan's sons Samuel, Cummins, and James were living in the same household in Columbiana County, Ohio;167 and Jonathan's daughter Anna Young was living in Wooster Township, Wayne County, Ohio, as early as the 1850 federal census.168

The 1850 census record is the most instructive census record for Jonathan and family:169 Jonathan Redick; born circa 1786 in Pennsylvania; Jane Redick (wife); born circa 1791 in Pennsylvania: children: Angeline Redick; born circa 1833 in Pennsylvania; Jane Redick; born circa 1837 in Pennsylvania, and Cummins Redick; born 1841 in Pennsylvania.

Also in the household in 1850 was a Jane Coulter, born circa 1773 in Pennsylvania. Relationships are not reported in the 1850 federal census. Presumably Jane Coulter is somehow related to the Redicks. She could have been the mother of Jonathan's wife Jane, although the death certificate for Jonathan's son Cummins reports his mother was Jane Brooks. This brings up another quandary: the Jane Redick, wife of Jonathan, was reported as age 59 in the 1850 federal census, which would make her about 49 when Cummins was born.

The 1850 federal census is my last valid record for Jonathan W. Redick, even though he has been reported from other localities in 1860 and 1870; for example, living in Rush County, Indiana in 1860170 and buried in Schuyler County, Illinois in 1870.171 However, examination of census records, burial records and cemetery inscription show these Jonathan W. Redicks/Reddicks could not be our Jonathan W. Redick. A guess would be that our Jonathan W. died in the 1850s, possibly in Hancock County, West Virginia.

There is one other individual record of Jonathan W. Redick. This is an International Genealogical Index (IGI) Individual Record:172
Name: Jonathan W. Redick.
Birth: 1786 in Washington, Pennsylvania.
Death: 1850.
Parents: John Reddick.
Marriages: Spouses: Jane Coulter.
Marriage: 1800, Pennsylvania.

Since the FamilySearch.org record gives no sources, other than the item was submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church, the validity might be suspect, perhaps constructed in part from Jonathan W.'s 1850 federal census. However, if proven valid, revisions will be needed, not the least being the surname of Jonathan's wife—at least one of his wives.

Children of Jonathan and Jane (?Brooks) Redick—but possibly some are children of Jonathan and a first wife. Children are in surmised order of birth, see endnote:173

2 i. male2 Redick; born between 1804 and 1809. He was reported in the 1810 (Bedford County, Pennsylvania) and 1820 (Huntington County, Pennsylvania) federal censuses, but not in subsequent censuses. Possible names are Jonathan and Joseph (but he would not appear to be the Joseph Seth Redick, reported in several genealogies).174
3 ii. female Redick; born between 1810 and 1820. Possible names are Harriet and Cynthia.
+ 4 iii. Matilda Redick; born 11 September 1819 near Lewiston, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania; died 6 February 1902; married James Clifford.
5 iv. Carson Redick; born circa 1823 in Pennsylvania; married, 23 January 1851, in Columbiana County, Ohio, Martha Margaret Turner.175 In 1850, Carson, single, was living with his brother Samuel in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, where both Carson and Samuel were listed as shoemakers. I could not find Carson nor Martha Margaret in subsequent censuses. Carson's sister Matilda and brother Cummins both named children Carson.
+ 6 v. Samuel Redick; born circa 1827 in Pennsylvania; married (first) Cynthia Baylef (also Bayless, Baylus); married (second) Amy Jenkins.
+ 7 vi. Lydia Redick; born 8 February 1829 in the Ligonier area of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; died 3 March 1919; married Jonathan E. Louden.
+ 8 vii. Anna Redick; born circa 1830 in Pennsylvania; married Jacob Young.
9 viii. Angeline Redick, born circa 1833 in Pennsylvania. In 1850, Angeline, single, was living with her parents and siblings Jane and Cummins in Hancock County, Virginia. No other information. Note that there was both an Anna and an Angeline Redick. In 1850, Angeline was still with her father, while Anna in 1850 was married and living in Wooster, Ohio.

There was an Angeline Redick (her married name); reported born circa 1833 in Ohio, whose husband was Jonathan Redick; born circa 1823 in Ohio (both his parents reported born in Virginia). Jonathan was a farmer. The family lived in Brown Township, Delaware County, Ohio, in 1860 and 1870; and in Butler Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, in 1880 (no birth locations reported for Angeline's parents in the 1880 federal census).176 Also with the family in 1860 and 1870 was a Benjamin Jackson, born circa 1850 in Ohio. Also in the family in 1870 and 1880 was a John Holley, "nephew," born circa 1853 in Ohio. I can not place this Jonathan Redick/Reddick, born circa 1823 in Ohio, parents born in Virginia. Could his wife Angeline be our Angeline and she married probably a cousin?
10 ix. Jane Redick; born circa 1837 in Pennsylvania. She was living with her parents and siblings Angeline and Cummins in Hancock County, Virginia, now West Virginia, in 1850. No other information.
11 x. (tentative) James Redick; born circa 1838. James was the only name not appearing on the original list of names obtained from Etta Lanyon, granddaughter of Cummins Redick. James's name and birth year are known only from the 1860 federal census when James and his brother Cummins, both listed as farm laborers (both erroneously reported born in Ohio), were living in the household of their brother Samuel in Columbiana County, Ohio.177

Perhaps the census birth date for James, 1838, is an error. If so, a candidate for our James Redick, if indeed Jonathan had a son James, would be James Redick, born February 1831 in Pennsylvania (both parents born in Pennsylvania); married Elizabeth Glisson, born circa June 1839 in Ohio. In 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910, the family lived in Findley Township, Hancock County, Ohio, where James was listed as a clerk in a shoe store in 1870 and 1880 (no occupation given in 1900 and 1910).178 Children of James and Elizabeth (Glisson) Redick known from the federal censuses (all born in Ohio): (1) Nellie Redick, born circa 1867; (2) William (Willie) G. Redick, born 30 January 1871; died 1892 in Findley Ohio; (3) Mary G. (or Y.) Redick, born May 1872 in Ohio; married William Henry Rose; Mary, single, was enumerated as a teacher in 1900; and (4) Elizabeth Redick, born June 1876 in Ohio; single and enumerated as a teacher in 1900.179 Note the son William. Except for Cummins, all of Jonathan's children named either their first or second child William.
+ 12 xi. Cummins Chillian Redick; born 8 May, either 1840-1841 in Pennsylvania; died 1937; married Sarah Elizabeth Crawford.
