William McCreery Ramsey was one of the most distinguished lawyers of Cincinnati, Ohio. Possessed of a quickness of judgment, a power for work, a command of fascinating speech, a varied learning, and a versatility of talent, that made him one of the most conspicuous figures at the Bar. To him belongs this special distinction of being one of the attorneys in the famous "Bible in the public schools" case. In that case were George Sage, afterwards Judge Sage; Stanley Matthews, afterwards Justice of the Supreme Court. . . . It was the general verdict that among counsel for the retention of the Bible, Mr. Ramsey stood pre-eminent, as Stanley Matthews was pre-eminent on the other side. It was only a short time after that the firm of Matthews and Ramsey was organized.
